Fifty years ago, a small gathering of dedicated herpetologists met to exchange ideas, share experiences, and lay the foundation for what would become one of the most enduring traditions in our field. On July 29-August 1st, 2026, we celebrate 50 years at the Chiricahua Desert Museum.

About the event
As we celebrate fifty years of the International Herpetological Symposium, we couldn’t imagine a better setting than the Chiricahua Desert Museum. This golden anniversary promises to be one of our most exciting gatherings yet, with big-name speakers (to be announced soon), our first-ever IHS Bioblitz on July 29th, and a blowout icebreaker to follow. Throughout the week, attendees can expect field herping galore—including guided excursions for our junior herpers, special guests, the return of both poster sessions and the Advancing Herpetoculture Sessions, a herpetoculture history panel, and a bonus Chelonian Symposium on Sunday at no additional cost. More than just a meeting, this 50th IHS is a celebration of our community’s legacy, a showcase of its brightest voices, and an invitation to help shape the next fifty years of herpetology.
